Speaking of nuclear warfare, I'm a big fan of civil defense. Basically it's a hole in the ground, food reserves, and water purifiers. The food reserves could be rotated out into food programs for the needy or for schools, whatever. We let civil defense go to pot because we were supposed to have mutually assured destruction, and CD is contrary to that. CD is very cheap, it is not sexy and it is totally non-offensive, which makes it unpopular with the military-industrial complex. But it works. It also works really well for natural disasters like Katrina. Basically we need to start taking Switzerland as our model for defense. We'll save big bucks and the whole world will be a much safer, more prosperous place.

A candidate's personal faith is worth looking at because that is what will govern his behavior when nobody is watching. Most politicians use their religion for public display purposes -- remember the ostentatious photos of Bill Clinton carrying a Bible as a prop? I definitely like the idea of having a president who is cognizant of the fact that he will one day stand before the Lord of lords and have to give an explanation for everything he did as president. Although the USA does not have a religious test oath for office, I strongly suspect that Ron Paul thinks of himself as taking his oath of office not only in the presence of man, but also in the presence of God. His passionate devotion to that oath could also have another explanation, or multiple explanations, but when I see his demeanor I suspect that his personal faith is constantly in the back of his mind. Perhaps it is so deeply ingrained in him that he is not consciously aware of it, but it governs him nonetheless, or rather that's precisely why it governs him. It is him. Just my observations, of course.
